Miller’s gang of prostitutes subvert the norm
by taking and using their sexuality as a form of power as Miller displays a
world in which attitudes towards their profession are warped. The prostitutes
run Old Town with their own matriarchy, people don’t look down on them as they
do in our society and it’s perceived as normal, it’s even a hereditary
position. Wendy is a character portrayed to have considerable authority and are
known as a powerful community and don’t seem to need men at all; a complete
subversion to what we know and expect.
